About us

Nick and Dorothy are longstanding trustees; Clara, Louise and Maggie were appointed at our AGM in November 2023 and Paula joined in June 2024

All the trustees live in the Hebden Royd district and share a vision for an outdoor pool.

Dorothy Sutcliffe

Dorothy was a Blackshaw Head parish councillor for many years, and has been a campaigner for a pool for Hebden Royd for 67 years, ever since she arrived in Hebden Bridge on the train aged 14 from a coal mining area of East Yorkshire in 1946.

Paula Harding

Paula has recently moved to Hebden Bridge to join her family. She is nearing retirement from a long career working to end violence against women. She swims at Todmorden pool daily but looks forward to much more outdoor swimming locally!

Nick Wilding

Nick is chair of the HRDSPA and has been on the board since 2007. He’s a trustee of the Friends of Heptonstall Museum and secretary of the Hebden Bridge and District Old People’s Welfare Committee. He's well known for his films about local history.

Clara Collett

Born and raised in Hebden Bridge, I’m an avid wild swimmer working in the arts and cultural sector. I advocate for local voices in decision-making, utilising co-creation for programme design. I use evaluation and research to deliver inclusive and participatory initiatives.

Louise Heppleston

Louise is a recently retired ASD consultant who now enjoys volunteering with Calderdale search and rescue dogs, running with Sowerby Bridge Snails and outdoor swimming. She remembers baking cakes for the pool fund back in the 80s and is keen to see it become a reality.

Maggie Smallwood

Maggie worked as a research scientist until her retirement in 2018. She has been active in community activities including the Calder Valley Community Land Trust, Womencentre Homes and local relief for COVID. She has built a natural pool.

Jane Pickford

Jane gained a passion for swimming al fresco from an early age and became a lifeguard during her student holidays. Before retiring Jane lectured and published in the areas of youth justice and criminal law. Alongside her academic position, she represented a London borough for Youth Court sessions. Since retirement she has acted as an external examiner at UCL.

The HRDSPA is run by a charitable company limited by guarantee, Hebden Royd and District Swimming Pool Association Limited. The Directors of the company are also Trustees of the charity.  The Trustees are regulated by the Charity Commission and Companies House. The Directors are elected for a term of three years by the members of the company. Anyone aged over 16 can join as a member. This is the same structure as Hebden Bridge Town Hall. Policies

The HRDSPA is developing a suite of policies to ensure that we operate legally, ethically and efficiently. As the Directors approve these policies they will be published below.
